Foot Orthosis (Orthotics, insoles or arch supports) are aids that you wear inside your shoes to treat common conditions of the feet and the lower limbs. At the Moorside Clinic, our experience in clinical assessment and gait analysis combined with the use of technology gives us the ability to prescribe insoles tailored to you to achieve the best possible outcome.
Off-the-shelf insoles are used when a low level of support is needed. They are a one size fits all solution to treat simple foot conditions. Our Orthotist will review the information gathered from the footscan technology and biomechanical assessment and if off-the-shelf insoles are right for you, a range of options can be offered. Off-the-shelf insoles are particularly useful for children.
Bespoke insoles are made to the shape and contour of your feet to ensure a perfect fit. They are usually made from firmer materials and are fully customised based on the results of your biomechanical assessment. They can even be customised for each foot using our state of the art footscan technology and 3D printed orthotics. This is ideal for individuals with different sized feet or those suffering from conditions on just one foot or side of the body. The result is not only less pain through optimal biomechanical function but a better fit inside your shoe.
We also offer more traditional bespoke orthotics manufactured from an impression of your feet. Our Orthotist will combine the information gathered from the footscan technology and your biomechanical assessment to ensure the insoles fit and function perfectly for you.
Biomechanics is the science of the movement of the human body, including how bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons work together to move. Carried out by our Clinical Specialist Orthotist, our biomechanical assessments specifically examine the lower limbs to identify any issues with alignment and structure and to highlight any strengths or weaknesses contributing to your pain or injury.
During the assessment, an emphasis is placed on how your feet function and the impact this may be having on the rest of you body. Your feet are your body's foundation and just like a building, if they do not function correctly, weaknesses and faults can occur in the rest of your body.
A biomechanical assessment is a 60 minute consultation, assessing how you walk and run (if required). Every assessment will begin with gathering a patient history, allowing you to share with us in detail your complaints, symptoms and treatment goals. During this process static and dynamic assessments will be performed to allow our orthotist to observe posture, joint alignment, strengths and weaknesses. You will be asked to walk over our footscan pressure plate to allow analysis of the forces and pressures placed on your body. The information gathered from the biomechanical assessment is then reviewed by the Orthotist.
The findings will be explained in detail with you, and if appropriate a treatment intervention will be discussed. It’s really easy, all we ask if that you ensure that you bring both normal day-to-day shoes, sport shoes and a pair of shorts or loose-fitting trousers (that will roll up past the knee) to your assessment.
